I remember when I was small, before portable DVD players and when the radio was the biggest luxury item you'd find in a car, that long car journeys were a mix of eye-spy, reading my Famous Five books and colouring in. With that nostalgia in mind, I absolutely adore these little hand-made colouring kits from Etsy store 'Ducks in a Row Boutique', right down to the super sweet hedgehogs that make it a vintage-inspired dream!
I can imagine any little girl ooh-ing and aah-ing over this, especially as it folds up into a little hedgehog happy handbag! A wonderful gift for a little one (or yourself, if you're feeling creative!), and it comes in a few different prints to suit boys, girls and grown-ups alike.
Of all vintage crafts, my absolute favourites are knitting and crochet. In fact, my delight in these endeavours has started to overtake my house, having amassed... well, a LOT of skeins of wool!
In any case, I've been looking for a way to tidy up my crafting area, particularly when I'm working on a project, so that skeins don't get strewn everywhere, as they're wont to do.
I love elineof's handmade knitting basket, with its mix of floral cotton chintz and mint polkadot oil cloth. It's reversible, stands up beautifully and most importantly, it's just so darn pretty!
She also has a style available with a graphic print, if you're not the Laura Ashley / Cath Kidston nut that I am. They're both available at elineof's Etsy store.
I love my laptop (I sometimes see it as an extension of my brain's storage capacity), but there's something awfully romantic about a typewriter. My nana has recently written a book - all on a typewriter. Time consuming? Yes. Not all that easy to edit? Sure! But so very, very pretty, no?
Anyway: Etsy, the place of all things beautiful, lovely and dreamy has quite a collection of vintage typewriters.
This white Adler portable typewriter is just gorgeous and comes with its original carry case. Can't you just hear the clickety-clack of industrious book writing looking at this picture? The best sellers? The accolades?
Just me, huh?
Well, I thought I'd show you some of the beauties currently on Etsy (including this one). For more, keep reading...
Having just returned from my first trip to Disneyland (a 25-year dream come true!), this week's Happy Thursday offering is one near and dear to my heart: the original broadcast chronicling the opening of Disneyland in 1955! For those who have never visited, it's a wonderful place. I left my adult brain at the gate and enjoyed five days of child-like happiness. If they ever make it a residential park, I'm there in a flash!
This is a veritable goldmine of 1940s goodness - holidays, carnivals, tigers, rides, even a swimsuit competition thrown in for good measure. So where could you find this kind of fabulousness in the 40s? According to this clip, Coney Island had it all! It may not stand up to today's health and safety standards but it sure looks like a whole lot of fun! I hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane...
I don't have any children of my own yet (give me time!), but every now and then I see something so lovely that I have half a mind to buy it and set it aside until I have little ones to share it with; and this gorgeous toy takes the cake!
Reminiscent of vintage racing cars, this little ride-on car would make a sweet substitute for the generic plastic styles so readily available in department stores. Made from metal - the kind of quality you don't tend to see nowadays - it would also look wonderfully decorative in a vintage-styled nursery.
When I decided that I wanted a vintage-styled bicycle in July of last year, I found that there were very few options to choose from. I desperately wanted an Electra Amsterdam, but at almost $1000 it was well out of my budget. I eventually settled on a simple Electra Cruiser in powdery cornflower blue - and was quite happy with it - but with the recent flood of fabulous "new vintage" bikes on the market, I suddenly want to make mine prettier and more girly than it is!
I stumbled upon the marvellous Jane Brocket many moons ago through her blog Yarnstorm. Since then, she has published no less than two books, with Ripping Things to Do scheduled for release in July!
Her first book, The Gentle Art of Domesticity, chronicles Jane's forays into many a crafty endeavour - knitting, crochet, quilting, gardening and baking among others - drawing you into her colourful and creative world full of tea cosies, hand-knitted socks and vibrant tulips. More a coffee table book than a how-to, it's one of my favourite visual feasts to get me in a crafty mood.
